Walk for Life!

Yep...Sweet Little Helen's Feet just minutes after birth.

We have been huge fans of the Greensboro Pregnancy Care Center for years and are SO thankful for the service they offer young women in our area. They offer pregnancy counseling, early ultrasounds, many free services and supplies for moms in need. They are an excellent resource and alternative for anyone facing an unplanned pregnancy. We are huge supporters of LIFE and love that the Greensboro Pregnancy Care Center is ministering to women holistically and helping them see the value of the precious little life within in them!

A few days after giving birth to Helen, we received a newsletter announcing the Walk for Life on April 25th. I immediately looked at David and said "I think I want to do the Walk for Life this year"

In the hospital we were reminded just how precious life is and how amazing God is to create this little being within me. After Helen's birth we prayed for her, thanked God for her life and prayed for all the millions of babies who will not have such a chance. So, so sad.

The Greensboro Pregnancy Care Center is helping to change that! One little baby at a time!

Please help me by supporting this cause and sponsoring me in my efforts to raise $ for the Walk for Life! I am starting out with a $300 goal, but I hope to up the goal to $500 if all of YOU hop on and join the team to support me!

You can click on the button on the right hand side of my blog, or follow this direct link . Any donation amount is a huge help towards my goal, and all donations are tax deductible!

Helen is 2 weeks old today...and I have 5 weeks to be able to walk 1 mile... I think I can do that.

Helen will be my walking buddy!
Here's to Life!

A Little Baby Fix...

Don't you just want to eat those cheeks? It's okay...we do too!

Yes, I took these pics...trying to learn... lighting issues are killing me though!

Loving all that hair...we get to wash, comb... I may even pull out the hair dryer soon!

Sweet Charlotte practicing her letters.
And I must admit she does a pretty good job for a 3 year old. She loves "writing".

Here is the conversation we had tonight:

Mommy: Charlotte, do you want to take Helen to show and tell on Wednesday and show her to all your friends?

Charlotte: well.. ummm....I don't really think Helen will fit in my back pack.

I'm not making that up....is she hilarious or what?
I literally laughed out loud!

Celebrating the Resurrection with your kids...

How do you focus your kids on Christ during Easter instead of just Jelly Beans, Bunnies, and Egg Hunts? Now I love all of the three above, and our house will be full of Easter delight, but I really struggled last year finding GOOD Christ-centered activities for celebrating Easter.

My calendar had marked last week to "begin planning Easter activities". Well, I have been a tad busy having a baby and all.... but now that I am back to normal (yeah right...maybe in denial! But this is a relaxing outlet for me) I thought I would think about it.

One thing we did was use parts of Noel Piper's Lenten Lights devotional. You have 7 candles and we centered ours around a cross. You can either celebrate the 7 weeks leading up to Easter (way too long for my little llamas) or the 7 days (much better). We used some of the verses, but mainly it was just another visual reminder at meal time that this week was Special... it was all about God's Son! And our Salvation!

There is always the trusted Resurrection Eggs
of which I am a huge fan (though I think we need to replace a few cracked eggs this year) Walmart used to carry these, but I think they nixed them...we wouldn't want Easter to become too Christian and offend anyone now, would we? You can pick one up at your local Christian Book store. Even last year at 2 1/2 Charlotte had memorized what was inside every egg. It is a great memory tool.

Here is a great Jelly Bean Prayer that we sent out last year to all our preschool friends with little baggy of jelly beans.

My next great find was the Good News Magnet Set by Alphabet Alley.

I put this on the side of our fridge and lets the kids play with it. Alphabet Alley doesn't seem to have them on their site right now (kinda weird) but I found it being sold on another site. They also have a Nativity magnet set that the kids loved playing with this year.

I also looked high and low last year for an Easter Resurrection Playset (kinda like the little people nativity set?) only to be very disappointed at the options...basically there are none. I did come across a plush/stuffed tomb that zipped and all the characters could come out of the tomb...can't find that online anywhere this year...wait I found it.... thank you Catholic Supply .
I think there was a reason I didn't buy it last year...maybe the $32 price tag! And the fact that my kids would probably destroy that in .2 seconds. Did you hear what happened to our stick manger this Christmas?? BAD NEWS!

Instead, We resorted to making our own tomb out of homemade playdough
(from Noel Piper's book Treasuring God in our Traditions)

We painted it and borrowed some little people figures to play out the scene. It was a hit! But I still think a plastic or wooden Easter Play set would be beneficial for little minds learning the real meaning of Easter. (hint, hint...little people...get with it. Did you know they make a Little People Hanakkah set? Who knew? Why not easter?)

This site also has some great activities for celebrating Christ's Resurrection the week leading up to Easter.

And since I know the real reason you all clicked over to the blog was for a little baby fix, check in later for more pics of Helen. Loading the pics to the computer is the part I slack off on...getting them on the blog is easy.

Happy Easter Planning...
Please post your tips as well for "Treasuring Christ this Easter"

Oh, What is in a Name??

For those wondering about Helen’s name,
we would love to share the significance behind her name.

Her middle name “Ann” is in honor of both of her Grandmothers --- Shelia Ann and Patricia Anne both are great women of faith, strong women and wonderful mothers. We pray the same will be said of Helen Ann and that their legacy would live on in her.

Her first name “Helen”, is after one of our Great Heroes of the Faith, Dr. Helen Roseveare. We first heard Helen’s story when she spoke at our Campus Outreach New Year’s Conference in 1999, when we were both students. Helen, originally from Ireland, gave years of her life as a medical missionary in the Congo. She would forego a well paying career in medicine to spread the name of Jesus in a foreign country. She experienced much suffering as she ministered in the Congo. Helen was kidnapped, imprisoned, brutally tortured, yet remained…and years later returned to carry out the Gospel and medical work among these same people. Her most impactful words on us were:

The question is not, Was it worth it?
The question is, Is HE worthy?'
And I said, 'Of course you are, Lord. You are worthy.'”

This statement alone influenced us as students to want to give our lives to Kingdom things. And we pray this is true of Helen. That she will live her life for Jesus, saying “Yes, Lord, YOU are Worthy!” We pray that our Helen Ann would live a life of faith and worship that would declare the worth of the Lord Jesus Christ.

If you want to learn more about Helen Roseveare, here is a great clip from Noel Piper sharing about the impact Helen has had.on so many.

Our whole family is adjusting well... though Carson seems to be taking the newest addition a little harder! But the kids both love Helen and they are going to be great brothers and sisters! My great hope and prayer is once we make it through these challenging "toddler years" having our children all so close together will reap so many rewards and we will see them become best of friends!

Well... sounds like some little llama is waking up..... Off to tend to the herd!

Littlest Llama FINALLY arrived!!

We Joyfully Welcomed into the World

Baby Helen Ann

on Friday, March 6 at 3:06!

She weighed a lopping 9lbs! And was 21 inches long!

Mom and Baby are doing great. She came 6 days past due date.

To try and coax Helen along, I got some reflexology on Thursday afternoon. That night around 8:00 we had some minor contractions and thought Thursday was the night! However, the contractions stopped around 1:00am. We went in for a scheduled Dr appt Friday morning and I was 4cm dilated and contractions had picked up again. This time they were stronger, but still about 10 min apart.

We chose to go walk around and get a smoothie! We walked around, browsed some shops (unbeknownst to all around that we were in labor!) for about 2 hours. Around 12:00 we came home to labor some more...I tried to rest and get "some" sleep in between contractions.

Around 1:00 I called for David to come down and help me with contractions...they were getting harder and I needed my coach! It didn't take but 30 minutes and I was saying we needed to go to the hospital. We stayed for a few more contractions.... we wanted to make sure we didn't go too early! We decided to go on and got to the hospital at 2:00.

I was having very hard contractions, very close together. As we were admitted and signing papers, my water broke (like in the movies!) all over the admitting entry way and the chair I was sitting in! I knew then we were having a baby very soon and was just hoping it wasn't going to be in the waiting room!

(Thank goodness we hadn't waited another 10 minutes at home...or this would have been all over David's Car! That would have been fun)

They rushed me back to a delivery room.... my midwife came in and I was 9 1/2 centimeters dilated. She basically said "you just let me know when you are ready to push"

Needless to say, we were in shock! We waited about 20 minutes, then began pushing. About 17 minutes later, Helen was born at 3:07.

What a glorious moment! David Helped deliver her head, and was I able to pull her out on to my belly! We had an amazing delivery and such a sweet time bonding with her in those first moments! She is perfect in every way...that full head of dark hair, every fat roll, and both chubby cheeks...all 9lbs of her!

Thanks for sharing in our joy!
We Praise God for this Great Blessing he has given us!

I will post later about Helen's name and the meaning behind it.
Our pastor took this little video and jsut sent it to us--

Spit on This...A Watched Pot Never Boils!

Well, A watched belly never births. Once again I am overdue...and I do NOT like it!

This counts as a Spit on This Post.
(click on the link to read more about what Spit on This is all about)

We are officially 1 day overdue. My first 2 babies were both 10 days over due, so this should come as no surprise to us that our baby did not come early. But we just don't think she will come 10 days late either. I mean really... she really needs to come soon.

But we joked the weeks leading up to the dues date....
-We wanted to get through Carson's B-day party...Way Done...that was a month ago!
-She needed to wait until we had our Valentine's Date...Done!
-She needed to let me watch the big Cross Over Grey's/Private Practice Episodes... Done, and was a 2 week ordeal!

Only we do the unimaginable and ask our baby to wait.

And then I was really ready for her to come. Really. Then a week ago, I broke out in Poison Ivy. So we prayed the unimaginable again.... that she would just wait until it cleared up. Who asks their baby to wait?

I had a few patches on my arms, a really bad patch on my face, and the worst of all was very bad reaction on my...BELLY! Yep... someone (who would do this?) pulled their pants up (over their big orgenant belly) with their garden gloves on and somehow spread the poisonous death trap all over her not so little baby bump.

I was put on steroids (safe for baby) and super cream... but with all the great changes a woman's body goes through in pregnancy.... my reaction was pretty bad. My hormones are up, my immune system is down, and the skin on my stomach has been stretched beyond belief.

Thankfully, everything has cleared up quickly, except the stomach and it is alot better...but still healing. The poison Ivy is cleared, but it is still very sensitive.

Wednesday, I go for a lovely day of pampering. Pedicure. Haircut. My house is in order, my laundry is done. And it is a great day for a baby to come. And she doesn't.

Then Thursday, I start hacking up a lung like a chain smoker. David calls it the thunder cough. No cold, no congestion...boom out of nowhere I have phlegm in my chest from Lord knows where (maybe another one of those pregnancy phenomenas) and I am losing my voice and hacking up a lung. Not to mention all the oddities that come along with being 10 months pregnant and coughing really hard.... anyone who's ever been pregnant out there know's what I am talking about and can give me an "I hear ya!"

So... I think I am getting better. Come on Helen! The hacking is subsiding... a little.

And boom.... after beautiful 65 degree weather (hence the gardening and the poison ivy) Our little corner called home is getting hit with an ice/snow storm tonight. Nice. Thankfully we live only 2 minutes form the hospital. But it does make it a little challenging for our sitters and mothers to get to us if needed.

So, we do the unimaginable again... and kindly ask our overdue baby to wait until this all melts.

We think Wednesday would be a great day for a baby. The snow will be melted, my cough will be gone (please Lord!). Though we have been told something about a full moon and Tuesday being "the day" she will come. I am just praying we have no more reasons to ask her to wait.

So in leau of our request for Helen to wait till this Snow is gone, I have shelved my "labor inducing tricks". Once we feel really really ready, I will pull out my bag of tricks and go to town trying to evict this little womb-squater.

And I will share my tricks with you.... and all the funny (and not so funny) things people have said to me as I tick away baking this little turkey.
